Householders struggle to obtain promised aid for green homes. The latest scheme – the £ 1.5 billion Green Homes Grant (GHG) program launched by the government in September 2020 – was March closed without warning for most households. Many people who applied for advance permits to insulate their homes or install carbon-free heating had to either pay for work themselves or abolish plans to upgrade their homes. Only low-income households still have access to GHG funds through a limited pot managed by the local government. Boris Johnson promised a new scheme next year, loaded with rhetoric about ‘rebuilding greener’ and about the UK leading the world in the campaign to reduce greenhouse gases and hosting the United Nations COP26 Climate Change Conference.
