Following the consultation letter of 24 January 2020 the Secretary of State has received further comments from interested parties on the responses to the consultation which ended on 31 December 2019. The Secretary of State is currently reviewing these comments and, if required, may decide to issue a further consultation with interested parties.

The Analysis the Applicant uses to demonstrate the ‘urgent need’ for nuclear new build is out dated and must not be given significant weight in the determination of the Application. The Applicant says “the principle of the need for new nuclear power stations, and that this need is urgent, is firmly established in NPS EN-1 and…EN-6”, and further that EN-1 and EN-6 are the “primary policy basis” for the determination of the Application. This is simply not the case. Greenpeace demonstrates how the landscape has changed in the last two years, and why the argument that nuclear new build is both necessary and urgent is in itself out dated, meaning that significant weight should not and cannot be placed on the policy support for new nuclear on this basis.
