Households will receive automatic compensation payments of £30 if a switch of supplier is delayed for more than two weeks from May. Ofgem first mooted plans to punish energy firms for delays in 2018. The new payouts go further than the original plans, shortening the minimum acceptable time for a switch from 21 to 15 days. Customers are already compensated if they are switched accidentally without their permission or for late payment of credit balances. Payouts so far have totalled £700,000. A record 6.4 million people switched supplier last year.
