Co-op Energy moves to acquire Flow Energy. If it goes ahead, the deal will represent a major mid-market merger in the UK’s domestic energy retail market, combining Flow’s customer base of around 130,000 with Co-op’s base of around 320,000. Co-op’s offer to Flow Energy will be subject to scrutiny at the latter’s company meeting next month.

An energy technology company that raised £1.8 million via crowdfunding is on the brink of being wound up in what could prove to be one of the biggest failures for the emerging industry. Backers of Sustainable Power, the designer of a new kind of boiler, have been told that the company was due to be liquidated, amid allegations that inaccurate claims were made exaggerating commercial interest in the company’s technology while it was pitching for crowd finance in 2014. As the City regulator prepares to outline new rules for equity crowdfunding, the episode raises fresh questions about due diligence standards. Equity crowdfunding allows ordinary investors to easily acquire shares in private companies via online platforms. People can buy equity for as little as £10. The industry has helped small British companies to secure more than £200 million in growth finance.

Ecotricity has today announce it is to join forces with the National Forest Company to support plans to develop a forest across 200 square miles of central England. Under the partnership Ecotricity will sponsor the new Timber Festival this summer and donate £60 to the National Forest project for everyone who switches to the green energy supplier. The two companies said they would also jointly explore the potential for renewable energy use as part of the forest project.
