SSE said on Wednesday it was in early talks with the competition watchdog over its proposal to merge and spin off its UK household supply operations with those of rival Npower. The FTSE 100 energy supplier announced last November it was in talks with its rival to create a stand-alone energy supplier. MPs had called on the Competition and Markets Authority to investigate the proposal as it will reduce Britain’s Big Six to just five. SSE said on Wednesday it has been in “pre-notification discussions” with the watchdog.
