A major demolition project at Hanford was halted two days this week after air monitors worn by several workers showed they might have inhaled radioactive particles. About 5 p.m. Thursday, work was cleared to resume after radiological control zones were expanded at the nuclear reservation’s highly contaminated Plutonium Finishing Plant.

Energy Secretary Rick Perry’s proposal to give coal and nuclear power plant owners more money to insure grid reliability last week had the nation’s grid reliability overseer say not so fast. The North American Electric Reliability Corp. last week released its 2017 Long-Term Reliability Assessment of the nation’s bulk electricity generation and transmission system, Kallanish Energy reports. NERC as it’s known, is the independent organization given federal oversight over grid reliability. In fact, NERC is the source of one of the Department of Energy’s citations in its notice of proposed rulemaking (NOPR), asking the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to act by year’s end to give cost-recovery status to coal and nuclear generators in wholesale energy markets, Greentech Media reports. Last week’s report found, despite the rising number of coal and nuclear power plant closings, “new resources, which are primarily natural gas and renewable generation, should collectively provide the bulk power system with the same level of voltage support, frequency response and other essential reliability services as conventional generators,” Greentech Media reported.
