Fugro has said that it has completed a six month offshore site investigation project for Turkey’s planned Sinop peninsula nuclear power plant but the future of the project still remains in doubt. Turkey’s state-owned nuclear power company EUAS International ICC commissioned Fugro to undertake the series of geological, geotechnical and geohazard tasks at the site on Turkey’s Black Sea Coast. The new 4,500MW plant was due to be developed by Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries but the firm pulled out of the project after a feasibility study led to the project programme and costs not matching government expectations. In January last year, Turkish energy minister Fatih Dönmez said the government had agreed with Mitsubishi “not to continue its cooperation” and it was set to seek a new supplier but none have yet been confirmed.
