Military chiefs must find an extra £300 million in savings this year to cover a rise in the cost of Britain’s replacement fleet of Trident submarines, The Times can reveal. The army is set to take a hit, with commanders ordered to make at least £100 million of efficiency savings on top of hundreds of millions of pounds that have already been squeezed out of threadbare budgets for training, maintenance, accommodation and travel.
