Letter David Lowry: If Lord Robertson of Port Ellen as Tony Blair’s first defence secretary, really did conduct a “foreign policy-led” strategic defence review, it is impossible to understand why the Labour government persisted with the Trident nuclear programme. Its proponents describe it as a “deterrent”; its detractors, including most countries outside the nuclear weapons club, see the £205-billion system as an offensive nuclear weapon of mass destruction. There are no rational circumstances under which this super-precise weapon could ever be fired in anger. The present government has the opportunity to impress in its new guise as leading “global Britain” by initiating multilateral nuclear disarmament talks at the review conference of the 196-member state nuclear non-proliferation treaty at the UN at the end of April.
