The public favour spending on better cycling routes and bus services over major road building investment, according to a poll that suggests public backing for low-carbon transport options has soared during lockdown. Dramatic shifts in people’s travel habits in recent weeks – largely because of a rapid move to home working – has left the public highly supportive of expanding local transport options. According to the poll of 2,000 British adults by Opinium, 40 per cent of people want to see investment in local bus services, and 37 per cent of people want investment in cycling infrastructure. By comparison, fewer than one in seven people want money spent on more or bigger roads.
