World’s most powerful tidal turbine near completion as Scots workers overcome Covid-19 challenges. A Scottish construction yard has produced the main hull of what will become the world’s most powerful and technologically advanced tidal turbine, despite the challenges of lockdown. Once completed, Orbital Marine Power’s 72m-long O2 turbine will be capable of producing two megawatts of renewable electricity, generated by the ebb and flow of the tide. It will eventually be installed in the Stronsay Firth, off Orkney. Over the past 14 months workers at Gray Fabrication, in Cupar, have put in more than 19,000 hours building four large sections for the structural body of the new device and six other parts that will support two giant turbine blades spanning nearly 60m.
