An extreme heatwave that could shatter temperature records has prompted warnings that Texans should forgo using washing machines, ovens or tumble dryers. Operators of the state’s independent power grid said there had been a series of unexpected cuts and asked Texans to conserve power until Friday. The grid failed spectacularly in February during an anomalous spell of extremely cold weather. Now, as millions of Texans use their air conditioners during the heatwave, officials warned that residents would need to conserve power. It said that as well as limiting the use of household appliances, thermostats should be set no lower than 25C.
