A UK shipbuilder is turning to nuclear engineering, arguing that its skills in modular manufacturing — producing sections of ships and then welding them together with those built elsewhere — can be used to reduce power station costs by up to 30 per cent. The Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre on Monday opened a new £500,000 R&D facility at the site of 190-year-old Cammell Laird on the River Mersey to investigate the techniques. Jonathan Brown, managing director of Cammell Laird’s energy division, said it was already talking to Hitachi, EDF and other nuclear plant developers looking to build in the UK.
