Design work has begun on a new generation of nuclear-powered Royal Navy submarines, which will replace the existing Astute-class subs. BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce have each been awarded £85 million contracts to undertake design and concept development as part of the submersible ship nuclear replacement (SSNR) project. The work, which is expected to take three years, will require a workforce of 350 designers, engineers and shipwrights, based in the north-west and Midlands.
