It won’t be long before the number of submarines put into storage – which means simply being tied up at Devonport and Rosyth, using valuable dockyard space – will grow again. It simply cannot go on. Ministers need to bite the bullet, find the funds and devise a disposal strategy – to save money and maintain safety. Luke Pollard, son of a submariner and now the Plymouth Devonport MP, deserves credit for calling this week for a sensible strategy to dispose of the retired nuclear subs languishing in Devonport Dockyard.
