Small Modular Reactors (SMR) – revealing truths to demonstrate they are not as simple as they appear. Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) have been touted as being the simple solution to providing power without the overbearing cost of larger power stations such as Hinkley Point C. They are also marketed as straightforward ‘oven ready’ (!) solutions that can be delivered and readily installed – the reality is a lot different. This initial video about SMRs seeks to dispel some of the myths that surround these devices. We explore what is actually involved by examining topics including complexity and timescales. In a subsequent film we will discuss the proposed technologies and prompt questions about how and where the radioactive waste from SMRs will be stored.
