Warren East says the zero-carbon drive could make its nuclear energy ambitions far larger than its civil aerospace operations in the 2030. Rolls-Royce’s nuclear operations could dwarf its airline engines business next decade as the world moves to zero-carbon energy, its boss has said. Warren East is driving work on a Rolls-led consortium to develop “small modular reactors” (SMRs) aimed at meeting the growing demand for green energy from decarbonisation. Its “mini nukes” are expected to produce about 450 megawatts of power – a seventh of a traditional nuclear power plant – but could cost as little as £2bn each, or a tenth of their conventional rivals.
