The energy regulator has slapped Npower with a £2.4m fine by after the supplier failed to install enough advanced electricity meters for its business customers as part of a Government initiative to modernise the energy system. Ofgem requires energy suppliers to take “all reasonable steps” to roll out the new breed of energy meter, which is similar smart meters but not quite as advanced. But between 2009 and 2014, Ofgem said Npower had failed to do so in around 4,000 cases. During the same period Npower defied the regulator’s call for new meters and installed 200 traditional meters instead.
