The parts of Cambridgeshire that will disappear if there’s a nuclear disaster at Sizewell. While it’s highly unlikely that such an accident would occur, we wanted to find out how Cambridgeshire would be affected if the worst were to happen. However unlikely an accident like this might be, we were keen to find out the probable extent of such a disaster. To put it bluntly – a nuclear meltdown at Sizewell would be catastrophic. All of the East of England along with most of the Midlands, part of Wales, patches of northern England and parts of France would be affected. It’s impossible to know exactly how many casualties this would result in, as it would depend on the nature of the accident and how quickly radiation spread.

“So I am the head of a team called investment and investors I work for the new nuclear business at EDF energy – that’s the part of the business is developing new power stations, nuclear power stations for the company, mainly Hinckley Point C which is under construction and there is a second one that we’re developing called Sizewell C in Suffolk. We are doing a lot of work on that as well as third called Bradwell B which is in very early stages of planning. I work on the finance side so I’m looking at the costs and revenues of these projects and deciding whether the numbers add up and whether it is economic to build them or not”
