Sark householders are refusing to pay the world’s highest electricity prices as they go to war with the island’s power company. The tiny Channel Island, famed for having no cars, has been locked in a year-long battle over spiralling price rises, with residents paying up to £400 a month to power their homes. More than 100 have now signed a letter to David Gordon-Brown, the owner of Sark Electricity, telling him they will not pay the 85p per kilowatt hour that he has threatened to impose this month. The average price of electricity per kilowatt hour on the UK mainland is typically between 12p and 16p but on Sark it has already risen to 66p this year. The only country with higher prices is the Solomon Islands at 75p.
