After Hendry’s recommendations there were high hopes that the Government would finally sign on the dotted line and give Tidal Lagoon Power the subsidy it needed to go ahead. But those hopes dwindled as month followed month and there was nothing but deadening silence from Whitehall. Last week Llanelli AM Lee Waters said he had heard from a “reliable source” that the Government would refuse to back the project. If that turns out to be true it almost certainly spells the end not just for the Swansea Bay lagoon but for tidal lagoon energy in the UK for the foreseeable future. Perhaps a deal can still be struck, or perhaps there’s a possibility that a different, perhaps larger project backed by a consortium of companies might emerge. But as things stand now few can be feeling very optimistic.
