Hundreds of millions of pounds of investment in research into robotics, offshore wind energy and cybersecurity will be announced by ministers today. The government has plans for 75 new centres for PhD training and will give £445 million to allow them to be set up at leading universities. Businesses are to contribute £386 million more in cash or kind. The centres will open in the autumn next year and take more than 4,600 doctoral students for four years.

The UK must focus on developing its position as a leader in intellectual property and project management for offshore wind projects, an expert review into British growth opportunities for the sector has concluded. According to a new report released on Friday by the Offshore Wind Industry Council (OWIC), Britain will struggle to compete for offshore turbine manufacturing jobs against the likes of China, where state subsidies and large scale deployment is expected to help bring costs down. Instead, it should pursue a leadership position in the emerging service sector for offshore wind projects in a bid to maximise the economic potential of UK exports, the report advises.
