The offshore wind industry is going from strength to strength and will play a far bigger role in meeting the UK’s energy needs as the technology improves. Features editor Binyamin Ali uncovers the opportunities for contractors. The UK offshore wind industry is fast becoming a world leader in its field. And the good news is that, thanks to several critical factors, boom times are just beginning. Fossil fuels are largely being phased out in favour of renewables. However, with space in Britain often at a premium, onshore wind has frequently proven contentious. The UK’s relatively low levels of sunshine have also cast doubt over the long-term potential of solar power. But what Britain does have is swathes of surrounding ocean featuring some of Europe’s strongest winds. As a result, the UK has been installing offshore wind turbines at a faster rate than any other country in Europe over the last decade – in 2017, it accounted for more than half (52 per cent) of all the offshore wind turbines constructed across the continent.
