Radioactive Waste Management (RWM) is interested in finding out more about cosmic ray muon tomography techniques in relation to the geological disposal of UK’s higher-activity radioactive waste. RWM is responsible for planning and delivering geological disposal in the UK. It recently published a prior information notice to suppliers, asking for more information about the use of cosmic ray muon tomography – an imaging method similar to an X-ray – for ground characterisation and condition monitoring of ground displacement. In particular, the organisation is interested in applications within the context of geological disposal facilities (GDFs) or other civil infrastructure projects in the UK or internationally. “This is to support a level of understanding that can be utilised to assessing if there is an applicable programme of work that RWM might engage with or initiate in support of the overall GDF development,” the notice said.
