No scientific evidence exists to assure the long-term safety of the deep geological repository (DGR) for high level radioactive waste – nuclear fuel bundles – when not one of these DGRs, based on a Swedish KBS design, yet operate anywhere in the world. Therefore, as a well-educated woman, I strongly disagree with Ms. McBride on a number of the statements in her letter dated June 29th, and titled “The science behind Canada’s nuclear industry waste solution.” What I state in this letter is based upon seven years of doing science research to be an informed oral intervenor at both of the two public hearings about the OPG DGR proposed for low-and-intermediate level waste. I also delivered several written submissions to the federal government, and to the International Joint Commission on the Great Lakes, in which I cited a number of science journals about international research that clearly spell out the lack of research yet available on how various radionuclides would impact the environment at multiple levels. Furthermore, I continue to advocate for North American studies on radionuclides, which are not just absent but, worse, studies have been resisted by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission as well as its American counterpart, with the argument that regulations are sufficient – but they are not!
