NUCLEAR energy is one of the most divisive issues regarding the link between energy security and sustainable development. Advocates call for nuclear power to have an increased share in the global energy mix. It produces less greenhouse gas emissions than fossil fuels (i.e. coal, oil), making it a potential mitigation option to fight climate change. Given current technological standards, nuclear power also has the highest capacity factor of any low-carbon power source, able to meet the baseline energy requirements of various countries. However, its long-term economic and environmental impacts are too much to offset these benefits. Thus, nuclear energy should not be prioritized as an energy source over renewables globally and in the Philippines.
