CAMPAIGNERS yesterday delivered the message that a “nuclear-free independent Scotland is possible” as a rally was held outside the Faslane submarine base on the Clyde. Nuclear weapons would have to be removed from Scottish soil within three years of the country becoming independent, under proposals being considered by the SNP. The party, which will debate the issue at its conference next month, has been working on a road map to move nuclear warheads and submarines from the Clyde and drawing up defence diversification plans intended to cushion the economic impact of their withdrawal from the Faslane naval base. One estimate by the Fraser of Allander Institute at Strathclyde University indicated that the Ministry of Defence employed 4,700 people in Argyll and Bute, accounting for 34 per cent of the total local jobs.
