Radioactive Waste Management (RWM) has informed the borehole sealing market of an upcoming £9.5M geotechnical engineering contract related to plans for a UK geological disposal facility (GDF) for nuclear waste. RWM, a subdisidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, intends to procure a partner, or a number of partners, to assist in delivering the final and fifth phase of the “Sealing Deep Site Investigation Boreholes” project. As the UK’s £5M geological disposal programme progresses, it will be necessary to drill boreholes as part of site investigations, to identify whether the geology at a site could be suitable for an underground facility for higher activity radioactive waste. Before site investigations can start, RWM needs to demonstrate its ability to seal any boreholes to regulators at the Environment Agency.
