There are currently 12 nuclear submarines at the dockyard – that number was 13 until HMS Courageous was de-fuelled and has transformed into a ‘museum ship’. Nuclear power is used for vessels which need to be at sea for long periods of time without refuelling or for a more powerful submarine propulsion, according to World Nuclear Association. There are mixed feelings about these submarines, with residents nearby worrying about the safety aspect of 12 nuclear vessels so near. But the MoD said in 2013 that “no plausible scenario has been identified by the MoD, or any other party, that results in a meaningful threat to public health from dismantling a de-fuelled submarine.” But what is the history behind some of these once mighty vessels?
