Three more nuclear projects the same size as Hinkley Point C will be needed for the UK to meet its climate change goals, according to the Energy Systems Catapult set up to accelerate the transformation of the UK’s energy system. In its report Nuclear for Net Zero, the Energy Systems Catapult backs nuclear projects as a means to achieving the UK’s 2050 net zero carbon emissions target. The report recommends, providing costs come down, at least a further 10GW of new established reactor designs are built. This is over three times more capacity than will come online from the Hinkley Point C power station already in construction.
