Trade union leader calls for more nuclear power stations in Scotland to hit net zero. Gary Smith of the GMB said it was “time to be realistic” about the role of nuclear in the UK’s energy mix. Supporters of nuclear power believe this energy source would help meet climate change targets, while critics say the hazardous waste generated makes nuclear bad for the environment. Smith, recently elected the general secretary of the GMB, pointed to the thousands of jobs being created by the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in Somerset.
