National Grid has said it hopes that the energy regulator will relent on plans to halve its returns to investors, after the competition watchdog ruled in favour of higher returns in a similar dispute in the water sector. The FTSE 100 utility has been at loggerheads with Ofgem since the regulator published a draft price control in July that slashed the amount National Grid could spend on Britain’s energy networks and the returns it could make over the next five years. National Grid has indicated that it will appeal to the Competition and Markets Authority if the regulator does not relent, with a final decision from Ofgem due early next month.
