Local developer group Energy Isles has kicked off the early stages of planning for a 200MW onshore wind farm on Shetland in the far north of Scotland. The company has initiated scoping for a project featuring 63 turbines and tips of at least 150 metres on the island of Yell. Plans have long been in gestation but move ahead against a background of regulatory change, with the UK government signalling its support for remote island wind projects under the CfD mechanism. The site is mainly used for sheep farming and there are no nearby residential properties. Construction will be contingent on a long-promised interconnector to the Scottish mainland. Community company Viking Energy and partner SSE already hold consent for an up to 470MW project on Shetland.
