Energy supplier SSE is seeking permission to connect Scotland’s Western Isles to the mainland power grid in a bid to capitalise on the government’s recent decision to provide a potential route to market for onshore wind farm developments on the UK’s remote islands. SSE’s transmission and distribution arm, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), yesterday submitted its case to regulator Ofgem for the deployment of a subsea cable transmission link with the Scottish mainland that could “unlock the renewable potential of the Western Isles”.
