Schools and apartment blocks will no longer have to apply for planning permission to install solar panels, the environment minister has said. Eamon Ryan also confirmed that before the end of the year people who generate their own power through solar panels or other renewable means will be able to sell excess electricity to the national grid. The regulations on solar panels have been under review for the past 12 months. Responding to a parliamentary question, Eamon Ryan confirmed that his department had been “working closely” with housing officials on revising the exemptions for solar installations. A spokesman for the department of housing said that it was working on interim regulations to allow for the “vast majority” of the country to be covered by the solar panel exemptions.
