The government has been forced to intervene to prevent a county council from imposing an almost complete restriction on wind farms. Damien English, the minister for local government, has ordered Laois county council to amend its development plan after it tried to ban all new wind farms within 1.5km of houses, schools, community centres and public roads. The “setback” distance would have restricted the development of wind farms anywhere in the county except for a small area at its extreme southern end near Rathdowney.
