Climate activists have pushed Leo Varadkar towards phasing out oil exploration in Irish waters but he “needs another good shove,” Bríd Smith has said. The People Before Profit TD had a bill to ban oil and gas exploration blocked by the government in July after winning the Dáil’s approval. The taoiseach said yesterday that he would phase out oil exploration off the Irish coast but that gas exploration would continue. Ms Smith told The Times that the government had issued exploration licences since her bill was blocked under the “money message,” which can halt legislation if there is a cost to the taxpayer.
