An American energy company warned the government that Ireland faced “profound” power outages like those in Texas this year when making the case for a €650 million liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Kerry. New Fortress Energy is pushing ahead with plans for the LNG terminal despite being told by the government five months ago that it was opposed to the project. This is the second attempt at securing planning permission for an LNG plant at the site. The Shannon LNG project became contentious after it emerged that it would take fracked gas originating in the US. Fracking is banned in Ireland, but there is nothing to stop fracked gas being imported.
