The government’s national development plan should be redrawn in light of the climate emergency to allocate more resources to public transport, cycling and walking, the co-leader of the Social Democrats has said. Róisín Shortall described the Ireland 2040 plan announced last year as “unsustainable”. It is meant to prepare the country for an estimated population growth of one million over the next two decades. It proposed €116 billion in spending to upgrade housing, health and transport infrastructure. Public transport projects including Metrolink; Bus Connects; an expansion of the Dart; four new Luas lines; and a light rail line in Cork were included in the plan along with a new motorway linking Cork, Limerick, Galway and Sligo; and €7.3 billion investment in regional roads.
