Pay-as-you-go electricity provider Pinergy has entered the bill-pay market and launched a suite of customer plans to coincide with ESB’s rollout of smart meters. The first of the 240,000 smart meters installed by ESB are due to be switched on at the end of this month. The devices, intended to give more accurate information on energy use and reduce the need for estimated bills, are due to be installed in 2.4 million households and businesses by 2024. By entering the bill-pay sector, it is hoped that Pinergy would have access to a larger market, given some people’s reluctance to switch to pay-as-you-go electricity tariffs. The company has introduced three time-of-use tariffs for bill-pay customers under its Lifestyle brand. “Work from home time” will provide a discount at peak hours from Monday to Friday, while the “family time” plan discounts tariffs between 6pm and 10pm. The “drive time” option offers a cheaper tariff for electric vehicle charging from 2am to 5am.
