Given Ireland’s self-declared status as a “laggard” when it comes to tackling global warming, the Dáil’s vote to make the country the second in the world to declare a climate emergency is welcome. For once, Ireland might be ahead of the curve in declaring its intention to act to tackle mankind’s greatest challenge. As the old proverb goes, however, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. It is actions that are needed from Leinster House, not aspirations. There is a very real danger that, much like calls for a right to housing in the constitution, this could prove a gesture that changes nothing, no matter how noble the intent.
