Ireland’s wind power industry recorded its best year to date in 2018, according to its representative body. The energy source provided 29 per cent of the country’s electricity demand and 19 wind farms were built. Figures from the Irish Wind Energy Association appeared to give the lie to suggestions that wind farms had reached peak capacity. The record for the most wind power recorded on the all-Ireland network at any one time was broken three times last year. The organisation, which held its conference in Dublin yesterday, said that a milestone had been reached in January: wind power provided more electricity than natural gas sources during the whole month for the first time.
