Scientists have predicted that Ireland’s summer temperatures could climb by 3C while the sea level could rise by nearly 20 inches during the next 30 years. Will Ireland Survive 2050?, an RTÉ documentary, considered the damage that could be wrought on Ireland by the warming of the planet and increasingly extreme weather patterns. The programme, presented by Ger Fleming, the veteran meteorologist, and Dr Cara Augustenborg, the environmental scientist, presents a series of worst-case climate change scenarios. One scientist said that Ireland could end up with the climate of Iceland if the Gulf Stream was lost. Places like Cork city are at risk of flooding because of the dual threat of rising sea levels and increasingly frequent extreme weather.
