Energy experts have suggested that Horizon Nuclear Power – which officially withdrew its planning application for the proposed Wylfa Newydd power station in January – might step in if China General Nuclear (CGN) are forced out of other UK nuclear projects. CGN – China’s state-owned nuclear energy company – is part of the Sizewell C consortium and is also developing proposals to build Bradwell B in Essex using its own reactor technology. However according to the Financial Times, the government is concerned about CGN‘s involvement in UK infrastructure, with British ministers believing the Suffolk-based Sizewell project would be viable without the Chinese company. Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit analyst Jess Ralston said Horizon “are an alternative to CGN so they might be interested”. However she said the economic case for nuclear will remain problematic until the government agrees a funding model.
