A proposed strike by workers building the nuclear power station at Hinkley Point has been avoided after they accepted an improved pay deal. Unions Unite and GMB had been preparing for industrial action after an ongoing dispute with EDF. EDF proposed a revised offer which increases holiday pay, overtime rates and pension contributions. Nigel Cann, EDF’s programme and construction delivery director at Hinkley Point says the company is “very pleased that the union members have voted to accept our offer”.

A new pay deal for workers at Hinkley Point nuclear power station has been hailed as setting a “new benchmark” for major sites. Unions Unite and GMB were preparing for industrial action at the Somerset site after an ongoing pay dispute with EDF. Phil Whitehurst, from the GMB, said the dispute could have had “devastating consequences”. EDF and main contractor BYLOR proposed a revised offer incorporating bonuses into the basic rate. Wages will be 36% above the minimum industry agreed rate and holiday pay, overtime rates and pension contributions will also increase.
