Energy companies that purport to be “eco-friendly” but are not as environmentally conscious as they appear face a government clampdown. Ministers are poised to announce within weeks measures to tackle so-called greenwashing, with a public consultation on new rules to curb the practice. It follows concerns that companies are profiting from consumers eager to spend their money ethically but are not actually complying with their side of the bargain. In 2019, people in Britain spent £41 billion on ethical goods and services — four times the figure recorded 20 years ago.
