Robert Habeck has penned children’s books and translated the poetry of the Liverpudlian Roger McGough. Germany’s Greens, whose public support is surging in the polls, will announce tomorrow which of them will become the party’s leader and try to replace Angela Merkel as chancellor when she steps down in September after almost 16 years in power. It is not a long shot. The Greens have come far since emerging four decades ago as an offshoot of West Germany’s anti-nuclear, environmental and peace movements. Polls in the past few weeks have put support for them as high as 23 per cent, just four points or so behind Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU), five months ahead of September’s general election.
