David Lowry (Letters, December 21) references our recent publication of the design assessment confirmation for Hitachi-GE’s UK Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (UK ABWR.) In particular, Dr Lowry states that the supporting documentation published by the joint regulators (the Office for Nuclear Regulation, Environment Agency, and Natural Resources Wales) contained only two paragraphs that mention nuclear security issues. This is incorrect and we are happy to put the record straight. Generic design assessment (GDA) is the process being used by the nuclear regulators to assess the new nuclear power station designs. It allows the regulators to assess the safety, security and environmental implications of new reactor designs, separately from applications to build them at specific sites. As part of the detailed Step 4 of the GDA process, we have produced a 32-page assessment report of the Conceptual Security Arrangements of Hitachi-GE’s proposed UK ABWR.
