Hopes the UK could cement a position as world leader in the field of nuclear fusion technology received a boost today, after the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and Oxford University spin out First Light Fusion announced they are working together on a pioneering project that aims to deliver a major breakthrough for the sector within five years. First Light Fusion said it is collaborating with the UKAEA on a project to convert fusion reactions into heat to enable clean power production. It added that it has secured funding from the Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy’s (BEIS) Energy Entrepreneurs Fund to support the project.
