Government plan to save nuclear business model. It is sometimes behind the most obscure mechanisms that hide the most determining political and industrial orientations. By putting online, in mid-January, a public consultation document on the “new economic regulation of existing nuclear power” , the government opened a major breach: to support the economic model of French nuclear power, it is proposing a reform that could lead to a major reorganization of EDF and an increase in electricity prices. Nothing has been done to date, but the government’s objective is clear: to put an end to the complex mechanism which forces the public group to sell a quarter of its nuclear electricity production to its competitors at a fixed price. EDF’s competitors are taking advantage of French regulations to buy nuclear power at a reduced price thanks to the Arenh to supply their customers. For EDF, this is a bad operation: the group is forced to sell its production at a favorable rate for its competitors, who then come to poach its customers.
